I got a set of tires to put on Mitsi (Ameritrac SUV's 265/75/15 on stock wheels). The shop had to put hella weights to balance and somethings not right. At about 50 mph I get a vibration/near wobble. It's not a sweet sensation!!! Gotta be the tires eh?

Could be the stock wheels, unless you've had other, similarly sized tires on before without that issue. If so, then I'd guess one of the tires had a cord separation inside the rubber and will have to be trashed. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Whenever I have to put more than about 3 oz. on to get it balanced, I return the tire. If I ever bought custom wheels, I'd always do it locally because even though I'll pay more, I can check the wheel balance before ever putting a tire on them and return the ones that don't balance well.

Did they try and rotate the tires around on the rim or did they just mount them and balance them right off the bat? I've gotten away a couple times with rotating the tire on the rim and it lessened the need for weights to where it was manageable. Good luck with that.

I didn't watch em put the tires on. So not sure what they did, but it is an older tire shop, with a couple ole timers working in there in their 60's-70's. What if I just tried rotating the tires to the back that are on the front? Maybe it would be less noticeable? Before changing the tires, there was no vibe.

did you goto a bigger tire? I know I didn't know my Raider had shot tie rod ends and idler arm until I went from stock to 31s. Bigger tires are the fastest way to learn you need to do some front end work. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

The tires I had on em before were much smaller. Maybe 225's or so. There are 6oz of weights on some of the wheels! Sadly I got the tires off Craigslist, but supposedly only have 100 miles on them. Possible my wheel got hot when my caliper was sticking, in turn warping that wheel? Or would just a bad rotor cause that kind of vibe?

A tire can be balanced but still not be smooth riding. Technically, you could balance a square tire if you really wanted to and one existed, but it wouldn't ride smoothly. Even if a tire is balanced it can still have high and low spots that will make it bounce slightly at certain speeds. This becomes even more noticeable on larger tires. If you have any worn suspension components they can move around slightly and make a small movement from the tire feel larger than it is.

It sounds like you may have got some out of round tires - a good shop should be able to do a road-force balance on them and remount the tires on the wheels so the highest weight positions on the tires are aligned with the lowest weight positions on your wheels to minimize the vibration. You will probably need to look for any slop in your front suspension and steering and replace any worn parts before you'll get it to ride smooth again.
