Apparently with all the rain and humidity, the coil cracked. THis explained why i still had spark and fuel. Changed it out with a new one and man what a difference even from when it did run good from before.

i think i will add a coil to my repair parts in the back of my raider.

awesome news and thank you very much for sharing with us!

glad it's running. I have a different problem. Mine every once in a while will decide not to start, just sits and cranks. I wait about 15 minutes and boom it runs. This is usually after a short trip (first of the day)

I read that you guys said "no codes" I thought ours didn't show codes as they are OBD1??

An engine code will appear if a sensor, fails breaks etc. Other check engine lights will usually appear if something is definitely wrong, Such as when my crank bolt broke and it lost vacuum, manifold pressure, etc. It might not come on if the problem is intermittent. I know from experience that as long as the computer knows it is getting spark it will provide fuel. As soon as it knows that it is not getting spark it will cut the fuel off. In my case it was getting spark as far as the computer was concerned but as far as the engine was concerned it wasnÆt getting enough. The engine code will be out put from the computer in the form of an analog signal, i.e. a sinusoidal wave function (a series of long and short pulses). The function can be determined using an ANALOG volt meter or an O scope. Digital meters cannot read the signal fast enough to process. Hope this helped you out. Anybody feel free to correct me if I am mistaken.

And to me your problem sounds like a fuel related problem, intermittent pump maybe or bad injector. Too much fuel or too little. If you get spark itÆs probably related to a fuel issue. I had a similar problem where I had two bad injectors that were stuck open. When it sat for a while they drained the fuel from the rail. It would take a couple of seconds to build up pressure before it would fire. Good Luck!

Renegade,

Thanks for the response, very good info. Where do I hook up my O scope or Analog volt meter to check for these codes?

You'll find the diagnostic connector behind the glovebox in a Gen1 (the white connector in the picture below)

[Linked Image]

You can find all the information regarding which pins to connect your analog voltmeter to, as well as the diagnostic codes and a lot of troubleshooting information, on page 14-76 and following of the FSM. If you need the FSM, you can download it from

MontyMcV's site

I'll agree that your problem sounds fuel-related -- I had similar symptoms with a failing fuel pump (although from your sig it looks like the pump was replaced relatively recently). Maybe you could try having someone spray some starter fluid into the throttle body while you crank the engine. If it fires on the starter fluid then it's definitely a fuel delivery problem, most likely the pump since when your problem occurs you can crank and crank without any attempt to light off.

Good luck! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Need a Spot
All,

I have a 1989 Raider, 4 bang-er version. The Check Engine like is on. I have remove the battery cable and no joy.

I have spent today looking for the "Diagnostic Connector" it is not there. I have use the photo in this thread to verify that I am not over looking it. I have check the cable harness and do not see any where the cables would have come out. Yes it is supposed to be behind the glove box. But on mine there is no evidence that it was ever there.

Any ideas where else it might be??

Thanks in advance

Good

is your's also not starting or did the light just come on and it seems to run fine? The 4cyl, from what i'm told doesn't have much in the way of diagnostics, but the odometer is set to trip the light on every 50,000 miles or so. there is a button on the back of the speedo that you have to reset. If you have higher miles and don't care about the light, they suggest removing the bulb.

Welcome. You'll get much better luck getting answers if you post this directly under it's own topic thread. What you're looking at in the pictures is a V6 model not a 4 cylinder model which probably has the connector elsewhere. If nobody provides the exact location just download the fsm (factory service manual) from mitsubishilinks.com and look up the location yourself. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Also be sure you read the FAQ for answer to many other questions you may have. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

It is running fine for the age and mileage. And I have the FSM and as far as I can tell, it does not distinguish between the 6 cylinder and the 4. On this topic...

I will try and get behind the dash and look for the reset switch and see if that helps.

Would rather not just disable it. I like for things to work as built.

Thanks for the tip

Good
