Getting the Wheeling Fever
For DD use. I just want to be able to go through the creek, snow, sand infrequently. So something with a little bite but will hold up for daily use on cursed pavement!

Tire and price per 4
Dunlop Rover RV XT, $577.49
Kelly AT Trailmark MAX, $545.87
Wild Country EX Sport, $610.00

What's comparable at Big O's?

I just struck out on a set of Ameritrac SUV tires on C-list. The shop I took em to put 6oz of weight on a couple of them and still couldn't get em balanced. Found out late General/Ameritrac is a pretty crappy tire company.

Do you have any Les Schwab around your area? I just put a set of Wild Country xtx on our Gen III and we are very happy with them. Fairly aggressive if needed but still great and no noticeable noise on the highway. My favorite tire right now is the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac I put a set on my Tundra and they are all around a delight.

Good Luck

Hold out for some Michelin LTX's, if they come up used. They flat don't seem to wear out, are GREAT on-road tires, and do acceptably well in light off-road use.

My $.02.

I would second that if you are looking for on road longevity. A friend had them on his 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser and I don't think he ever replaced them in the 80K or so miles he owned the truck. He never did any hard core crawling or anything, but he also never balked at the off road situations you describe and drove through at all without incident.

And another Duratrac driver (though not on a Montero). I feel like such a trend setter since nobody seemed to know anything about them a couple months ago when I was looking...

OK, ego stroking aside... They do have excellent road manners and great off road bite in one package. Possibly the best hybrid sort I have seen. Their on road life span is yet to be determined in my mind though. I have about 3K and no noticeable wear so that is promising, but I haven't yet met anyone with much more mileage so it will be a while before I suggest them to anyone wanting long life for sure.

I only listed the ones I could find locally in stock. So it sounds like nobody knows much about any of them
