Coming from the generation in question (1945-1960), the article is an interesting read.

And, Brian, I agree with your comments that the boomers will suffer. They will not get a free ride.

From my perspective, what is interesting is the free-love/counter-culture movement of the 60s has evolved into the the enabler of the entitlement driven brat pack of today.

The current administration owes a debit to the power that placed them in position. That position is to subject the last vestige of "free-market" to a government controlled social justice system. Social justice is about to be achieved.

It is more the "Quite Generation", those that sit between the Greatest Generation and the Boomer Generation that were the drivers behind the social justice movement of the 60s (when the boomers were coming of age and impressionable followers) that set the stage for the calamity of today.

The greatest failing of the Boomers is they are and have been a silent majority. They have sat on the sidelines while vocal minorities have pushed an entitlement mindset.

Yes, they will suffer because of their inability to become involved. They sat on the sidelines and let others make decisions that would affect them.

Responsibility and ethics have been supplanted by entitlement.

So, the real question is: Who is going to pay the bill?

It has been interesting watching the kool-aid kid try to formulate an intelligent thought while protesting that they are being forced to pay higher tuition fees due to being subject to repression. After all, they expect an entitlement to a free education.

Who will pay the bill?

Not them. They are paying too much. Pass the cost along to the future.

In short, today is an interesting display of fantasy un-marred by reality.

People want but are unwilling to pay because they believe they are entitled.

The buck stops here... but, where is that "here"??

Every generation is lame somehow. As a Gen xer we got labeled slackers by Reagan and his generation but once I got off my skateboard I worked hard for what I have.

I think socioeconomic demographics have more to do with the self entitlement. At both extremes of entitlement we have the ultra rich who raise kids never have to work for anything they have. At the other end you have the ultra poor who get a check from the government so the kids are never taught to work. THEN....you have the working class that struggles but gets it done on their own and they teach their kids that struggle. My grandpa taught my dad good ethics and my dad taught us and I will pass them on to my child. Obviously every kid goes through a "spoiled brat" phase where they think they have everything coming to them but with age comes responsibility/work and that kills any feelings of entitlement real quick in the working class. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

If I was rich enough though I'd teach my daughter other lessons besides "the struggle". I know some get irritated by a generation trying to get a leg up from the work of the past generation but isn't that how the successful ruling class operate. Wouldn't you want your kids to have it better than you had it? I would love for my kid to not have to worry about the daily grind just to pay the rent. Think of the brilliance that could be achieved if we could focus our minds and energy on bigger ventures.

I'd be sailing around the world right now......I think I'm entitled to a 45' sailboat and a trust fund but fate would disagree.

>>>*I remember it being called "Supplemental Security", not "Social Security". The idea was to save for old age, and then recieve a stipend to help in a person's old age.

It was never intended to be a complete source of income.

*Then government added dependents, disability, next we saw people addicted to illegal drugs being placed on the rolls, illegal aliens working in this Country and then going back to their own and our government sends them their check.

Then in their wisdom, government SPENT the money, telling us that we would recieve our "Social" security from future revenues.

I personally saw the flaw and being normally suspicious I began a savings and investment regimen. I put an average of 10% of everything I made into investments.

Then as it had actually grown rather steadily, along with a few surprising years of gains, I figured that I would have enough even when the system did collapse.

I say here "when" because I could have predicted what is coming at least 30 years ago.

My wonderful idea would have worked, too, except for one little problem.

I just had a bank offer me $0.70 percent on a rollover time deposit certificate IF I was willing to lock it up for a year with a 10% penalty for early withdrawal.

*They told me that with a straight face, too.

Now THAT works out to a fruit jar and a hole in the ground being a better deal because I at least would have access to the capital.

Yea, I am a baby boomer myself, actually I think I am on the leading edge of that.

The result of more than 30 years of "government"?

This baby boomer will work for the rest of my life.

Our ONLY solution is to REMOVE every single one of them at the first chance we get.

Will that work? Probably not...I will say that from a financial standpoint I am completely disgusted with this government......*EB

I have no illusion of entitlement. I am working on retirement by 55 but hey, I know unless I win the lottery it isn't going to happen.
