How exactly is welding the front up bad on the road?


Have you driven on the road with a fully locked front end? The handling is worse than horrible. In rain or snow even a tight limited slip is not rear enjoyable experience up front.

Sure when in 2wd there is no issue since the hubs are unlocked then.
