I'm starting to look for lockers for my 87 Montero SWB. Are ARBs' the only thing available? I've searched around on the net to no avail. Where have you guys found them. Thanks in advance.

ARB for the rear. Nothing for the front. You have to do a V6 front axle swap to get an ARB. There is another one out of OZ that appeeared recently. I think it may have been Detroit-like, can't recall. Search user FrankR as he got one.

You can also do a V6 axle swap and fit an LSD from a Starion/Conquest. Search past threads for this as well.

Another option for the rear is to swap an earlier Montero Sport axle with locker into your SWB. Lastly, you could get a Gen II locker from an SR and fab it up for leafs.

Has anyone just welded the front spider gears? How did that work out?

weld up the 7.25" front, its not strong enough to put money into
welded works good, but you need manual hubs

Don't plan on driving on the road with it. You will not like it at all. On the trail is usable especially in a dirt environment. On rock face it is hard on parts.

How exactly is welding the front up bad on the road? I would like to know more about this. Because to my knowledge in 2wd/with the hubs unlocked the front spider gears would have no effect on-road. I know if you weld the REAR it will chirp and wear out tires faster. But I didn't know that the front also had road issues.....

Have you driven on the road with a fully locked front end? The handling is worse than horrible. In rain or snow even a tight limited slip is not rear enjoyable experience up front.

Sure when in 2wd there is no issue since the hubs are unlocked then.

Tell me about it, my front LSD pulls me all over the trails on the snow. I think I need to dump in some additive.

Also Eli, with manual hubs, your front welded up wont be a problem in 2wd. Although you will probably put unnecessary wear on a truck with auto hubs.

Charlie, I'm going to very carefully disagree with you. I used my locked front end in the heavy snow on MN/ND roads for a week during my trip home at Christmas last year. While it took a little getting used to, I had no problems. In fact, I didn't take the truck out of 4WD again, until I hit dry pavement, after the locker helped me get out of a heavily rutted parking where my front diff was stuck on packed snow. Just my .02 after a very limited experience with it.
