Getting the Wheeling Fever
Ok guys, I've read and read.

New coil, new ICM, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, pump, battery.

It starts great if it's been sitting long enough. Take a trip somewhere (up to running temp) shut it off......it starts right up. Go away for a few minutes, 10 or more and it won't start, check the spark off the coil, NO Spark!! Bad coil? NO! Put a new coil on,STILL NO START!! Put the other coil back on, wait long enough, IT STARTS!!

It acts like something gets hot and trips some circuit that tells the coil to spark? I have a spare ECU should I swap it?

Just so we are clear, after I wait long enough it starts and runs awesome, besides a high idle 1100 all is great.

********this other ecu looks different, can I use it????

Ok here are the two ECU's the extra is out of a '90 Montero V6 5 speed, but it looks way different, mine is double tiered, also here are some engine bay shots, maybe someone will spot something wrong.

I was just looking online at electrical parts and saw Voltage Regulator??
Where is that? Could that be the problem??

The 1989 ECU is unique, different for stick and auto, and supports the EGR. The 90/91 ECU models do not split so many hairs.

thanks rxinhed for the response

even though it looks perfect inside it is pointing to my ecu being bad. is mitsubishiecu.net exchange for $299 my only option then?

if the '90 ecu that I have won't control my egr I'm guessing that would cause more problems so I can't use it.
I found a used '89 ecu online for $379 but who knows if it's bad. At least the ecu.net exchange is guaranteed

I would check the position of the switch in the gear lever area. Wiggle the gear shifter as you try to start it and see if it comes to life. Also, do you still have the heat shield between the starter and the transmission?

I have no real advice, if you have a new cables from the battery to a clean ground and good cable to the starter, then I would be stuck where you are at. o yeah very nicely clean engine.

I had a similar issue in the past.. But in my case it was this with a bad connection (minor corrosion) that would kill the spark, but when wiggled, the truck would start just fine..

BTW, that's one clean engine! Lets see some of the rest of the truck.. welcome to the forum.
