Heavens! Why inspect and fix something when I can just crank the heck out of it once in a while and go driving?

Seriously, it could be the regulator, but it could also be a few other things. None of them have the decency to appear bad to a cursory visual inspection, and I'm not willing to throw parts at it just yet.
