Getting the Wheeling Fever
OK, I have a 98' Montero sport that I bought about 3 years ago. the alternator took a crap and when I disconnected the battery to replace it, the radio then needs a code. The codes are typically written in the owners manual but no such luck, is there someplace other than a dealer to get this as Dennis Mitsubishi wants $40 to do it...they won't give me the code so even if they enter the code I won't have it. I took the title, my registration and my liscense to them but no deal....I'll never deal with them ! Any help would be appreciated. Bill

i had the same issue when I bought my montero, did the research and finally call mitsubushi international, registered my montero to my name and they gave me the code free. but I have also found that I have a 97 montero XLS that I am rebuilding and the code is the same 3550 you might try it <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Major rip off! I took my VIN to my dealer and they wrote the code down and handed it over. So it's $40 every time you disconnect the battery... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />

I addressed this letter to Keith Dennis, president of Dennis Mitsubishi, on your behalf. I'll post any reply I receive.

Mr. Dennis,

I am a member of an internet forum dedicated to enthusiasts of Mitsubishi Monteros of all years.

Today, as I was reading some recent topic posts, I was drawn to one in particular regarding an owner in your area who had replaced an electrical component in his Mitsubishi Montero Sport, which erased the radio's security code, rendering it inoperable. According to the poster, he contacted, in person, someone at your dealership, and upon providing proof of ownership of the vehicle, was told that the radio code could be input for him for a fee of $40.

The vehicle owner asked if the code could be supplied to him so that he could input it himself, and was told that would not be done for him, nor would the code be supplied to him if the dealership's service department entered it for him.

This would lead me to conclude that every time the battery is disconnected for service, an owner would have to return to the dealership to have this code reentered in order to use the radio, which seems patently unfair. Normally, this code is supposed to be recorded in the vehicle's owner's manual, but it was not done when the vehicle was new, as I understand the situation.

Since your dealership was mentioned by name, I felt it would be worth the time to ask you if this situation could be remedied to this owner's satisfaction so that your dealership could be reflected in a positive light to others.

Please feel free to contact me at the email address above with your response so that I may pass this along to the forum member mentioned above.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

John Butler

And a reply!

Mr Butler

Radios codes on Mitsubishi Cars have been a customer inconvenience for some time now. We give out radio codes 2-3 times a day. To get your radio code if you do not know it, we must have the VIN# of the vehicle and the Serial # printed on the back of the radio. If a customer calls us and knows those numbers we provide the Code over the phone at no charge. If the customer does not have the ability to remove the radio from the dash to obtain the radio's Serial #, we can provide that service for $45 plus tax. Labor to remove a radio is normally $90.00 but for Mitsubishi customers we do it for $45 because of these issues. After we put the code in the radio, we provide the code to the customer so they do not have to go through this process again. I'm not sure what this blogger was referring too.

Nice job John. They still figured out how to wrangle $40 out of us though. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

I think that's fair if they have to pull the radio.

I agree.

Was this what the dealership told you, original poster?

Not sure about the sport but on My old 95 SR if you pulled off the bezel around the radio (4 screws) you could see the number on top of the unit without pulling it out. Perhaps the same in the sport. I did this on the way to the Rubicon over the phone, they gave me a bit of a hard time untill I dropped the name of the almighty Montero club and my status as the former vice pesident they gave in and gave me the code. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
