Just got finished pulling the crossmember to do a trans fluid/filter change and found it's REALLY rusty where it contacts the frame rails. At first I thought the flaky rust chunks were remnants of some sort of gasket...(they aren't...right?). The pics don't do it justice but some of the flakes are a good 1/8th inch thick. What, if anything, should I do when I reassemble this? Should I try to reposition what's left of the rust flakes and just sandwich them back in place? Maybe make a loctite and rustflake sandwich?
