Need a Spot
Is it feasible to throw a turbo on a v6 3.0 Montero motor? Say a T3/T4? Or perhaps a small turbo setup just to get a little extra power on hill climbs?

Reason I ask is because I see a lot of 2.6 turbo swaps that folks are putting into their 3.0 Monteros. Would it not be easier to "throw" a turbo onto a 6g72 and get a little more power?

Thanks

~JM

Meh, it's sooo easy we figured why bother. Ya know, it's not a big enough challenge and all...

No, seriously, it's been discussed several times. There's an "alleged" kit in OZ that's available. Not sure of it's validity or feasibilty. Eddy and I have batted it around a few times over beers. He's gotten farther along than I have into thinking out the plumbing issues, what with all the room they left us in the engine bay....

I'd love to hear your ideas...

The 2.6 turbos are into 2.6 carbies. Lester in the Far East (Singapore? Sorry Lester, can't remember...) has a 2.6 LWB, but I think it was 2.6 too. (Other markets did get a 2.6 LWB.)

MBrannon wants to do a TT 3.0 or 3.5. OldColt has one under what it seems, but he is keeping his cards close to the vest. (Actually, I think he is jus busy with client work.)

There is a guy I met at a local show at the cottage who did a single turbo conversion on a 3000 SL.

I would like do a single on my 95 once the bottom end gets redone. A full TT would be more than I hav ethe bandwidth for. Not to mention that I need others to break that trail before I'd possibly have a chance.

Body Damage is Cool
I was thinking of turboing my blown V6, but lately the thoughts have shifted towards a small block swap or 4.3 swap for towing.

When I bought Matt's gen1 I asked him about a turbo swap. He said to use 3000gt turbos as they are small(a big turbo would render useless in a truck), custom exhaust manifolds, stock 3000gt injectors, piggyback ECU, Etc. basically the stock stuff off a TT 3000gt And about 6-8lbs of boost

It would be pretty simple if you started with a 3.5 DOHC motor as all the 3000GT stuff would bolt right up (relatively speaking). The SOHC are doable. Head over to the plymoth aclaim and duster forums. They are the kings of single turbo sohc 6g72 motors. I've done one single turbo on a 24v sohc 6g72. It put down 485 at the wheels but it was a lot of fab work and some goofy plumbing.

After a lot of thought and planning, I've decided to simply start with a 3.5 dohc SR. I'm getting lazy in my old age lol

I don't believe the Aussie numbers. BS. Over 1400ftlbs of torque? Mbrannons are more reasonable

That said, I like the idea of a v6 turbo. I like the idea of one big one instead of two little ones, mainly due to plumbing constraints and room on the dside. There are only relatively minor mods needed to get the exhaust gas from the dside to the pside, starting at the current y pipe under the truck. You would need a custom pside exhaust mani, made out of stout stuff like a 3/8" flange and sch40 weld ells and a cross to support the turbo weight and heat loads. This also is convenient to the current airfilter and maf and tb setups, and doesn't have the brake booster and m/c in the way. The TT setup would leave you short on fuel on a 3.5, most likely, and the last thing you want on a turbo is a leanout.

You'd need some kind of custom f/i management system, but there are tons of them out there, from the cheapies like Megasquirt up to natl debt size units. You'd also need some lower compression pistons, or use the 24v motors and lower boost.

Turbo sizing wise, I'd like one that blows around 450-500cfm at 12psi, for the potential for 300+hp (it takes about 1.5cfm per hp generated, as a general rule of thumb). A mitsu 16ish would be about right, or even a 14 would also be almost big eoough.

The 24v motors would also present a greater fab challenge, in that the exhaust ports are oval instead of round, so if you go that route, why not use the 6g75 3.8 engine and get the extra 50 cubic inches and torque and power? At least use the 6g74 3.5.

You want to be conservative on turbo size, to keep the low end torque and minimize spoolup time. I'd want to do this on an a/t truck, to take advantage of the loose converter for spool up at lower rpms.

I'd shoot for a max statio compression ratio of 8.5:1 for a 12v, and 9:1 for a 24v, and a max boost of around 10-12psi with the best premium fuel you can buy. Forged pistons would be a really good idea. Stock cam is probably fine, unless there's a lot of valve overlap.

A three row radiator core will be a necessity. An intercooler probably will be, too.

Awesome! Thank you guys.

Eddy the information that you just gave me is a major pleaser. I already figured on the modification to the ypipe to get the exhaust pressure back to the turbo on the passenger side. It made physical sense to do so.

I have the t3/t4 turbo. Is this considered a conservative turbo or should i consider something a bit smaller? I also have much of the plumbing already required for this build along with a intercooler.

on the note about the 3 row radiator? Whats the reason for installing one? (curious)

Megasquirt will more than likely suffice for something like this.

will a 3.8L actually fit into the gen 1 easily?

PS Twin turbo is a pain in the

Thanks again all

I don't know the t3/t4 flows, but you should be able to find them on the web.

The 3.8 will have a block deck 19mm higher than the 3.0, just like the 3.5. All other dimensions should be the same.

You will need to figure out a spark system under MS, probably a ford edis variant using the mitsu trigger wheels, or use an sohc with a dizzy. I'd make the effort to get the 24valves.

Re the radiator, when you raise the hp, you also raise the waste heat, and thus the size of the radiator needed. You also need to allow for the water and oil cooling of the turbo and those heat loads.

Both the gen1 and gen2 radiators are roughly the same size, as is the starquest turbo radiator. The starquest has a 2row, and the 2.6 carby truck has a 3row, and the third row raises the heat rating (approx 177500btu/hr) by almost exactly 50%. Early 3.0 radiators were also 3row, but I believe they went to 2 row in 90.

That rating for a 3row means you could waste the equivalent of almost 70hp to the water jacket, and you won't do near that.
