Aside from the 5th gear problem, the support for the rear main bearing is marginal. The clip the factory stamped out just didn't offer enough resistance against push- out. When it was a ball bearing in a 4- speed, no- one minded. When they went to tapered rollers, it became a trans killer. And it made the 5th gear loading problem worse, too.
You can make or modify a stock rear bearing retainer to solve the problem, and I think there might have been an upgraded factory part at one point- but then it went away. It's been decades since I messed with these- the v6 tranny is so much stouter...

There was a TSB on the thrust plate. The new one appears to have a harder finish. It pounds on the tapered rollers and the main-shaft. In my experiance the main-shaft tended to be worse than the counter shaft.
Either way, a new thrust plate fixes the problem. Most take a lot of miles before they have a problem.

Still have plenty of these in stock. Get your truck ready for spring. The new board at www.mightyram50.net will be up in the next few weeks. I recommend you post them up over there when they get their new board. Most members over there have KM132 or KM145 transmissions. Their current board will become a read only once they switch to V Bulletin. They also plan to add a Montero/Raider section on the new board.

Wasn't sure if the cable and hydraulic 5-speeds had different designations, thanks for clarification. I'll definitely be in touch, especially to protect from the turbo. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
