Getting the Wheeling Fever
Thank you very much for the pictures toyrunner as of now, the crank and cam are in the right position, sad thing is, they were all along. I"m goint to try to re-time it tonight. I am jumping the right plug, does it matter if you jump it before initial start up , or jump it after you start it. I was jumping it after I start it, but when I do it, the truck doesn't idle down or make any change in how its acting at all.

The list of things I'm going to do in the next 24hrs.

Re-set the distributor timing (cam and crank timing already set

Install toyota 2 valve thermostat

Reset the valves

bleed cooling system

Check to see if catalytic converter is somewhat plugged.

If none of these things fix it, I'm putting a lit match to it.

But I to need to know when to jump the terminal, before or after I start it, cause maybe I"m doing that wrong, but when I do jump it I really don't hear a difference or notice any change? Is that normal?

If the truck doesn't idle down when jumpered, you need to adjust/replace the TPS. I try to adjust it first, then replace. Cheap then spend.
When I adjust the timing without jumping the test plug, I set it at about 12-13 degrees.
that is the "static" timing.
Timing is your problem. A bad TPS will not give the right signal to the engine to make it work as it should. 4Crawler has a good write up on adjusting the TPS. Here
good luck.

Put the jumper on before you start it. This takes the TPS out of the feedback loop. That said, make sure your idle is set up right BEFOREhand.

Once you set the timing, you can remove the jumper and watch the timing advance with your light.

I put the jumper in before I started the truck and set the timing to -5TDC and when I took that jumper off nothing happened? maybe this is my problem. I also think that when I'm going down the road, my timing isn't automatically advancing, i.e. the truck runs best at idle and not under load, sitting in the driveway and reving it up, it sounds like it wants to climb over my gargage, then soon as I go, its boggy and gutless, would that be the TPS as well causing it not to advance. I really appreciate the help guys.

Today I test drove a chevy and checked out a jeep, but i don't want that crap, I just want my 4Runner working right!

EDIT: it has got to be the TPS, What the heck else could it be. I will read up on adjusting it, but it is really complicated looking! Is toyota the only place I can buy one?

set the timing at 12-13 degrees without jumping it. See what that does. If any better, TPS it is. You are really setting the timing too far retarded when you think you are doing it right

Jumper in, set to 0TDC per the book. Unjumpered should see it advance about 5 dg.

x 2 TPS is the root of all evil. You can find 'em on fleabay or perhaps RockAuto for a lot less than the dealer.

Boy a TPS is hard to find new. I found one on partsgeek for a 1985 with a 22REC, will that be the same as one for a 22RE?

I found a Denso brand one for about $35 dollars? Is that a brand worth buying. the others are in the $75-100 range
