I'm surprised the DMV guy didn't throw the beer truck test at you

Clay - that's good news, indeed! Truck driving isn't for everyone, but for those that enjoy it, it can be a terrific opportunity to become whatever you want. Many very successful trucking companies were started by one guy in a financed truck. The industry will take you where you decide to go. Good luck!

Frank

What, pray tell, is "the beer truck test?"

I like it when an examiner decides to step up a level or two as yours did.
I experienced that years ago when taking the flight test for my private pilots license. The examiner happened to own the company I worked for and I owned my own Cessna at the time. One section of the flight test you wear a hood so you can only see the instruments, the examiner flies for awhile doing some simple turns and climbs then hand the plane to you to level out. This time he did a full aerobatic routine and in the middle of an advanced maneuver handed me the controls. I pulled it out. After we got back to the airport the examiner says, "Never tried that before"

Like your examiner, he needed to raise the test level to probe your limits and rattle you a bit, we do get to remember those days.
Whomever you get to drive for, if you get sent into Baltimore or Washington DC, you will remember that test drive.
Good to see another able minded driver on the road. Congrats.

Cheers, Charlie

From a commercial a few years ago. The beer truck driver is tempted by hot girls in a convertible to follow them. Of course they just want the beer. There are other variations but it's always to get the beer.

Tomorrow is graduation. Yesterday I went to DMV and picked up a new copy of my driver history (I wanted one that reflects my commercial license with all endorsements (except passenger ).

Today, I went to visit the recruiter for Gordon Trucking and handed him a copy of the printout. He sat me down and asked me some personal questions (marital status, children, etc.). Then he offered me a run where I will get home weekly and have a good chance of being routed through home for my daily off-time sometimes. I didn't know those runs were available to newbies! My orientation should happen in the next couple weeks!

In related news, one of the local utilities has some interesting openings. First is for a journeyman mechanic, which I am well qualified for. The other is for an apprentice electronics tech (I'm probably overqualified, but that's ok). I applied for both and have been asked to appear for testing for both.

I really don't want to be a professional mechanic again. And with the Gordon position being offered, I won't take that spot unless something terrible happens. The electronics tech position, on the other hand, would be KILLER!!! The pay is phenomenal, as well. That's the only job that has any possibility of keeping me out of trucking.

That Gordon Trucking is willing to hand a noob a driving schedule that considers the family is quite noteworthy.

But, some companies, not just freight, recognize the need to keep good hands happy, and if it's as simple as that, it's a win-win.

x2 on the electronic job, but always good to get out of the woods to see the view sometimes.
