Getting the Wheeling Fever
This is what I've been working on while I wait on getting my engine back...

[Linked Image]

I first made a template of the Gen 1 dash. The template got things started, but there were still a lot of test fits and adjustments. Mostly, material just had to be removed from the front edge, due to the fact that the Gen 2 has a more curved windshield than the Gen 1. The overall dash widths are basically the same.

There's been additional material removed since this picture was taken.

Installing the mounts was fairly easy. I cut the welds on the ends of the main support tube so that the tube ends could slide in and out. Then I bolted the support tube into the dash, got things in position, and tack welded.

The steering wheel support is half Gen 1(to mount to the firewall and support the brake pedal), and half Gen 2(to mount to the support bar, and hang the steering column)
I'll take some detail pictures of the mounts once I take the dash out again.

I'm still using the Gen 1 climate hardware, but I hope to use the Gen 2 dash controls...I haven't actually checked to see if that is really possible yet. The ductwork aspect is going to be "interesting" too, but I've got some idea how I might try to go about that.

It looks like a lot of work. I do have to say however, I much prefer my Gen1 dash to my Gen2. I find the Gen2 nearly impossible to read during daylight hours. There are white replacement faces available, but I haven't heard good things about them.

Luckily my boundaries of what feels like a 'big project' have been stretched pretty far. If I end up hating it, the Gen 1 mounting points are all still there. I was partly just curious to see if it was possible, and I thought it might marginally make my wiring job easier.

My feelings towards it at the moment are pretty neutral...I think it's just too foreign looking, and I just need to get used to it. All the gaping holes make it a bit difficult to imagine the end-product, and I intend to paint/dye it some other color (undecided).

thx for posting the picks, even if it is something that we don't plan to take on, it definately motivates me and inspires new ideas.

I think it's totally awesome, and about the only thing cooler would be if a Hyundai galloper dash fell into your lap from heaven.

Hey Nate,

Not been on here for a while but I'm glad to see someone is being adventurous! It's not work if you want to do it...that's called fun.

I think it's awesome too. I can see my gen2 dash instruments just fine.

Keep it up

Keep up the mods. Gives a lot of motivation seeing what other guys come up with.

So how is this part of the project coming along?

It's going pretty well, completing all the wiring is the main holdup on getting the dash all buttoned up...it's not giving me any particular problems, it just comes down to competing priorities. Getting the steering column modified was a big step...it required more tweaking than I expected.

The leather covering on the steering wheel was worn, so I just cut it off. I'll either re-cover it, or dye it to match. I do intend to paint/dye everything before the final reassembly.

Here is the "interface" between the G2 dash and the G1 center console.

[Linked Image]

For now I'll probably just cut a section out of the spare Gen 2 console to make a clean transition to the old center console.

One of the next biggest steps is to get all the climate control features figured out. Electrically it shouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure how everything will work out with the push-pull cables, though I have compared the G1 sliders to the G2 knobs and all the functions are in the same order...so I'm optimistic. I'm sure the actual routing of the ductwork will be "interesting", but I'll figure it out...

Criminy Nate! How many times do I have to tell you to use the search function??? NONE of your questions will be answered there...
