as you can see, it is right next to the rear defroster switch and I have no idea what it does. I have consulted the manual to no avail. As always, any input is appreciated.

Well, in my '89 that's where the Gate Lock switch for the rear gate is located...

ya, it's definitely not a gate lock switch.

Then where is your back gate lock switch? Or is it manual?

Looks like a switch for aftermarket lights, definitely not factory. Look around the extremities of the front and back for any stray wires. If you find some, check for voltage with the switch in different positions...

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

the gate lock is manual. There are no aftermarket lights or anything like that on the vehicle, hmmm I thought maybe it was stock...

Alrighty then

Go to Chock-full-o-FSMs and download the '84 Factory Service Manual and see what was supposed to be in that slot Maybe that will help...

There is no section for dash/interior, only electronics and i have checked every page in elect. section with no explanation of any of the switches. The reason I thought it was stock is that the previous owners were an older couple who just used this on weekend family trips and when I asked them about it they had no idea.

What Nick said. There's no way that's an Original Mitsu switch. It was either installed by the dealer, a shop, or the owner.

That is a nice looking and fit aftermerket switch. I bet its been on their awhile, you probably could not find those nice fitting switches today.
