I am researching installing a flexalite radiator fan and dont find anything recent in the search. I see they have options for single and dual fan models, as well as a new variable speed controller. Last years posts are for a model that no longer exists. Anyone have any recent installations they know about?

After researching all the old posts on this and other boards, it looks like getting a stock Volvo electric fan off of ebay is the way to go. The Flexalite fans have caused too many problems with too many people to warrant paying twice the cost of a Volvo fan. Plus with the money I save, I can get the variable speed controller. I am installing a mean green alternator so should have plenty of juice to run an electric fan. Plus with a manual shutoff in the cab and the snorkel I will install, no worries about water crossings anymore!

I hear the 95 ford taurus fan is the best for our trucks, that's what i'm going to use when i do mine.

The thought of this being half the price by using a non Flexlite fan has caught my interest. If I do go this route, what will I need? Fan, Variable speed controller (is this from Flexlite?) and an on/off switch? If going with the volvo, which model/year? I had never looked at anything besides flexlite so this sounds really interesting.

Good job on finding the fan link, I found a guy who rebuilds them on ebay so they are around 90 to 100 bucks there.

THIS LINK has a writeup on the fan install and where to get the controller. Looks pretty basic, although I do NOT recommend item #6. Do NOT install with anything running through the actual radiator to hold the fan on, as that will wear a hole in your radiator. Do a search on yotatech or toyota nation and there are write ups where you reuse the stock toy shroud and drop the taurus fan into the shroud instead of using the taurus shroud. That looks like the way to go!

Well, I am one of the fools that had grief with the flex a lite fan, ran a 495. I did like the bracketry, did like the easy hookup, and really impressed with the amount of air moved. I tend to think that the electric fans really wont tax a stock altenator that much either, considering the size of the alt in a volvo/ford vs a truck too. In retrospect I think I would have been happy keeping the engine fan and just getting a new clutch for it. I did notice a little more pep in the truck, and better mileage (1mpg), the a/c does work better, and combined with my bigger trans cooler, I have kept temps way down in the engine. It sounds like the ford/volvo option is a good one, I would reccomend some sort of manual controls in the cab (wanting it on or off for water crossings) and a better temp gauge in case anything does go south, you will be able to know about it right away...

I have the two speed volvo fan I got off ebay, now I just need to get a thermostat controller. I plan to put two switches in the cab, one will be a 3 position switch for manual on, manual off, and thermostat on, the other switch for hi-low speeds which will work with both the manual on and thermostat on positions. The only issue with that is remembering to not leave the first switch in the off position ever, except for water crossings. I also plan to use either a lighted switch or a separate light that shows when the fan is running. Lots of wiring and places for failure. Will try to have a nice wiring diagram written up since its hard to find a good one that shows a setup for a two speed fan.
